Laboratory Technician
The primary role of the lab technician is to prepare chemicals, lab equipment, and student drawers for teaching lab.
In this role, you will maintain laboratory facilities and stockroom for experiments, plan laboratory exercises with faculty, and test and conduct experiments, exercises, and demonstrations. You will be required to provide technical assistance to staff and teaching assistants concerning experimental preparations and procedures, and ensure compliance with health and safety standards of laboratory operations
Responsibilities
Prepares adequate quantity and quality of chemicals for experiments in a timely manner.
Prepares, issues and replaces laboratory equipment.
Installs, maintains, and issues student drawers.
Responds to technical questions, questions related to stock solutions, and use of equipment to staff and teaching assistants.
Maintains supplies and equipment inventories; orders supplies and equipment for laboratory; keeps stockroom organized.
Maintains teaching equipment and instruments to ensure accuracy and efficient performance.
Serves as safety officer for teaching laboratory; stays in lab to oversee safety during scheduled teaching time.
Plans support of laboratory experiments, ensuring adherence to protocols and safety regulations; assists in troubleshooting and correcting experimental errors.
Develops quality standards and programs; maintains quality of stockroom, safety, and environmental regulations, and other applicable requirements.
Maintains student breakage card records and submits list of charges and refunds each semester.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
Education
Bachelor Degree or High School Diploma.
Professional Certificates are an asset
Experience
At least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Technical Skills
Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
Knowledge of the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities and/or equipment.
Knowledge of laboratory and experimental protocols and procedures
Knowledge of chemical, hazardous waste, industrial hygiene, and/or environmental health standards.
Knowledge of laboratory operations and/or procedures
Behavioral Skills
Ability to prepare stock chemicals according to given standards.
Ability to enforce laboratory safety
Ability to prepare stock chemicals according to given standards.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to analyze and solve problems.
Ability to utilize, calibrate, configure and/or troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments.
