Surface Preparation Technician
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare concrete and steel surfaces using methods such as shot blasting, scarifying, grinding, and mechanical scabbling.
- Operate and maintain surface preparation equipment, including blast pots, shot blasters, grinders, and scarifiers.
- Follow project specifications to achieve the required surface profile (CSP/SSPC standards) and cleanliness.
- Perform surface cleaning duties, including vacuuming, sweeping, and air blasting to remove contaminants and debris.
- Assist in the application of primers and coatings immediately following surface preparation.
- Adhere to strict safety protocols when operating equipment and handling abrasive materials.
- Complete daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance tasks.
- Work collaboratively with application technicians to ensure efficient workflow.
- Document work completed and report any issues to the supervisor.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Proven experience as a Surface Preparation Technician, Blaster, or in a similar role within industrial painting, flooring, or corrosion control.
- Knowledge of surface preparation standards (e.g., SSPC, NACE, ICRI) and methods.
- Ability to operate heavy surface preparation machinery and hand tools.
- Understanding of the safety hazards associated with abrasive blasting and mechanical preparation.
- Physical ability to perform manual labor, lift heavy equipment (up to 25 kg), and work in various environmental conditions.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Relevant safety certifications (e.g., for abrasive blasting, confined space, fall protection) are a strong advantage.
